“PICK-AND-CHOOSE” CHRISTIANITY

Pick-and-ChooseA 2013 Harris Poll shows that 75% of Americans believe in God. This is a significant number but down a bit from recent years. According to the same survey, 68% percent believe in some concept of the divinity of Jesus, and 65% believe in His resurrection. In addition, 68% believe in Heaven, while only 58% believe in Hell.

I remember growing up and enjoying the occasional family treat of eating at a local cafeteria. They had everything. They had all kind of salads, vegetables, main courses, breads, and desserts you could imagine. Choosing from all the items was half the fun. If you didn’t want that green vegetable, you just passed it by and went on to the next choice. We live in a day like that. We live in a day in which many people engage in “pick and choose” Christianity. They see life as a theological buffet line, in which they are free to pick and choose which parts of Scripture they will obey. When they come to something in Scripture that makes them uncomfortable they just ignore that doctrine and pass it by. They formulate their own version of Christianity…but the truth is what they are living is not Christianity at all. Make no mistake, dear friend. God is not mocked. The Apostle Paul said, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,” (Romans 1:18)
